Project

FixCity:Bike Racks, encourages residents and community organizations to suggest new bike racks, verify suggested locations, gather statements of support from the broader community, and finally submit a “shovel-ready” bulk order to the Department of Transportation. This application used social mapping tools designed to “crowdsource” community and government collaboration, to enable smart ways to efficiently match residents’ needs with city services.

Approach

We were made aware of the complex bulk order process the DOT needed to follow in order to place racks. We built the application as a collaborative tool that incorporates citizen-government transparency. A user is invited to suggest a rack using the online tool, twitter or email. The racks are grouped by community boards and submitted to the DOT as a bulk order through a community organization. The generated submission then merges with the DOT’s database making the process seamless.
